Prince William County Police are looking for a suspect(s) who put a a small dog in a black trash bag and left it in the area of Fleetwood Drive in Nokesville early Friday afternoon.

According to police, a caller reported that they heard an animal in distress when they were in the area.

"Upon checking the area, the caller located a small dog in a black trash bag along the side of the road," police spokesman Officer Nathan Probus said.  "The dog was found to be in extremely poor condition."

Probus said the caller attempted to give the dog some water; however, in its deteriorated state, it was unable to drink.

Animal Control Officers immediately transported the dog to the Prince William County Animal Shelter where it was evaluated by a veterinarian and ultimately euthanized.

"Officers transported the dog to a state lab for a necropsy and further examination," he said. "Animal Control Officers are currently seeking any information about this case which will aid in the identification of the dog’s owner."

The dog is believed to be a tan, 10-year-old Chihuahua/Pomeranian-mix, which weighed about 3 lbs and had no identifying marks or collar.

The investigation is ongoing.
