Prince William Landfill Reopens After Haz Mat Spill

Posted

Personnel at the Prince William Landfill announced they are reopening their facilities after a hazardous material spill shut down the site around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

While the landfill itself is open, the Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Collection site will remain closed until 10 a.m. Saturday.

It was a quick-turn around at the site, which not an hour earlier closed in respond to a hazmat spill.

“The landfill was temporarily closed due to a reaction between pool chemicals and water in a large drum. The reaction, which created gas and spillage, is complete and the site is being monitored,” said Deborah Campbell, spokesperson for the Prince William Landfill.

Because the Household Hazardous Waste drop off site was right near the entrance to the landfill, Campbell said they exercised an “abundance of caution” in closing the entire facility.

Police and Prince William County Hazmat team have since deemed the landfill the safe to reopen.

Prince William Department of Fire and Rescue also responded to the scene. According to DFR spokesperson Kim Hylander, the fire fighters “addressed and mitigated the incident,” which was quickly controlled.
