Residents are using their smart phones to hunt down Pokémon everywhere; Prince William County Police cautions players of the free Pokémon Go app to have fun, but be careful.

The popular augmented reality game uses a phone's GPS and clock to detect when and where someone is playing the game. As a player moves in "the real world," new Pokémon appear on the phone. The objective is to catch them.

Officials suggest players pay attention to their surroundings when playing.

"Keep in mind not all people are hip to the trend; don't trespass on private property or in restricted areas," a police spokesperson posted on Facebook.

They also warn residents to be visible when playing at night, and absolutely do not play while driving.

"If approached by an inquisitive police officer, simply educate him or her on what's cool," they said. "Lastly, have fun...this game is practically exercise."
