PWC Receives $20,000 for Archaeological Study of Bristoe Station Battlefield

The Virginia Department of Historic Resources awarded the Prince William County Department of Public Works a $12,000 grant to support an archaeological study at the 133-acre Bristoe Station Battlefield Heritage Park. The Prince William Historic Foundation and the Prince William County Historical Commission will also contribute $8,000 toward the study.

“This study will identify and locate possible Civil War military graves,” said Robert Orrison, historic site manager. “It will allow the County to properly manage, preserve and interpret a possible mass grave of Civil War soldiers associated with Camp Jones and possibly the Battle of Bristoe Station.”

The Historic Preservation Division of the Department of Public Works announced that the study will begin in the fall.  At that time, the staff will host a public day for residents to visit the site and host archaeologists to answer questions.

For more information, residents are directed to call (703) 366-3049 or email rorrison@pwcgov.org.
