Red Flag Warning in Effect until Thursday Evening

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for Northern Virginia from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday for strong gusty winds and low humidity, which could enhance the threat of wildfires.

A Red Flag Warning is meant to alert residents that a high fire danger exists.

"A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior," the NWS said.

The weather service reports that humidity Thursday morning through early evening will be 25 to 30 percent, with wind gusts up to 35 mph and fuel moisture less than 8 percent.

"Any fires will have the potential to spread very rapidly due to strong winds, low humidities and dry vegetation," they said.

Showers are expected after 11 p.m. Thursday, which should minimize the risk for tomorrow.

Highs in Northern Virginia should reach 77 degrees Thursday and 72 degrees Thursday.
