Red Flag Warning in Effect until Thursday Evening

Along with an active Wind Advisory, the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for Northern Virginia from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. Thursday for strong gusty northwest winds, low humidity, and dry air.

A Red Flag Warning is meant to alert residents that a high fire danger exists.

"A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior," the NWS said.

The weather service reports that humidity on Thursday afternoon will be 20 to 25 percent, with  northwest wind gusts up to 45 mph and fuel moisture less than 10 percent.

The Wind Advisory for the area is in effect until 11 a.m. Thursday.

Highs in Northern Virginia should reach in the mid-30's Thursday.Warmer temperatures will return Friday with highs near 60 degrees and wind gusts up to 22 mph.
