The Crash Investigation Unit responded to a fatal accident involving a dump truck and a sedan that occurred 3:46 p.m. Wednesday on Route 29/Lee Highway near Lake Manassas Drive.

"When officers arrived, the sedan was found fully engulfed in flames," a police spokesperson said. "The driver of the sedan was located inside the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene; the driver of the dump truck reported minor injuries."

Police will release the identity of the deceased driver once the next of kin is notified.

Police have shut down traffic on Route 29 in both directions and are advising residents to avoid the area. Traffic was backed up from the scene to the I-66 exit.

"Northbound Lee Highway is expected to reopen as soon as the roadway is cleared," he said. "Please avoid the area and use alternate routes."
