Updated 7:58: The severe thunderstorm watch has been cancelled.

A powerful storm system is heading toward Prince William County. While it’s unlikely to be a storm like the one that produced the notorious derecho, the National Weather Service is advising residents to take caution.

The NWS has issued a severe thunderstorm watch until 8:00 p.m.

“Expect showers and thunderstorms to continue to develop this afternoon along and south of a slow-moving cold front. Some storms will become severe and will be capable of producing damaging wind gusts and possibly large hail,” NWS said.

NOVEC reports that they are monitoring the storm and advise residents to report any outages to 1-888-335-0500.

NWS also warns that a heat advisory may be needed on Thursday as heat indices may exceed 105 degrees.  Severe thunderstorms are also possible on Thursday.
