State Police Investigating Sudden Death of Local Police Officer

The Virginia State Police is currently investigating the sudden death of a Prince William County Police Officer Detective Juan Pena of Manassas.

Pena died before 11.a m. Monday. Police have not released the cause of his death.

"State police are conducting the investigation at the request of the Prince William County Police chief, as the officer’s death is a difficult and tragic loss for his many fellow officers," Virginia State Police Public Relations Director Corinne N. Geller said. "At this stage of the investigation, the death does not appear to be suspicious in nature."

The incident occurred Oct. 13, shortly before 11 a.m.

A Prince William County Police spokesperson called Pena "a dedicated and well-respected member of the police department and a loyal friend to many."

"Juan cared deeply for his family, friends, and fellow department members, and his smile and kind heart showed everyday through his encounters with those he loved and cared for," he said. "His loss will be felt profoundly by all of us with the department and his memory will never be forgotten."

Pena served in the United States Army from 1996-2003 before joining the Prince William Police Department as a patrol office. He became a school resource officer in 2007. During the last three years, Pena has been assigned to the Violent Crimes Bureau as a robbery detective and most recently as a Homicide Detective.

Pena is survived by his wife and children.
