According to the FAA, Barnes is a student pilot who was practicing approaches at Manassas Regional Airport. "At this stage of the investigation, it appears the single-engine, fixed-wing 1980 Piper PA28-161 lost power and made a crash landing into a tree in the backyard of a residence," Virginia State Police Public Relations Director Corinne Geller said. Following the crash, at 9:11 a.m. Sunday, Virginia State Police Trooper B.J. Norris responded, Geller said.
Emergency crews, comprised  of Fire & Rescue personnel and Prince William County Police, extracted Barnes from the downed plane and transported her by air to Fairfax Inova Hospital for treatment of serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

"There was no damage to any houses or structures on the ground; nor was anyone on the ground injured," she said. "The National Safety Transportation Board was notified and the FAA responded to the scene to conduct its investigation."
