Image from the Ashley Madison websiteThousands in Northern Virginia may have found themselves in the doghouse when the website, Ashley Madison, “The Original Extramarital Affair Site” was hacked last week.
Ashley Madison claims to be the “online personal & dating destination for casual encounters, married dating, discreet encounters and extramarital affairs;” however, much of that discretion was broken when hackers leaked the client information of the business's 39 million users.
Since then, a formidable list of subscribers in the Northern Virginia area has been posted on a community website and subsequently has been shared via social media.
The list is organized by zip codes. The personal information revealed includes the names of local Ashley Madison clients, their street and email addresses. The clients appear to be identified by the names listed on their credit cards. Such 'names' include “Gift Card” and even the names of a few local business.
Some might be surprised by the sheer number of Ashley Madison clients living Northern Virginia. The list uploaded by "Mrs. Snowden" is pages upon pages long and includes 155 clients in Bristow, 142 in Gainesville, 120 in Haymarket and 33 in Nokesville (20181).* Manassas and Manassas Park addresses with zip codes 20109, 20110 and 20111 total 534. Additionally, more of Ashley Madison's Manassas clients live within the 20112 zip code. These numbers do not include duplicate or multiple listings under similar names or addresses. And many users do appear to have opened multiple accounts.
Other Northern Virginia areas that made the list include Centreville, Clifton, Warrenton, Ashburn, Sterling, Woodbridge, Reston, Dumfries, Fairfax, Vienna, Alexandria and Arlington.
The majority of clients listed were male by a very large margin. Of the 534 Manassas clients, fewer than ten of them had female names. This leads one to wonder how men actually met women via the site?
It should not be assumed that the discrepancy in numbers between the genders accurately reflect the ratio of men to women who engage in extramarital affairs. According to WebMD men and women cheat on their spouses for different reasons. In general, women cheat when they are unhappy with their primary relationship, but men can be happy with their wives and also desire another lover.
The D.C. Metro area also appears to be one of the regions that had a high number of Ashley Madison users.
According to Business Insider, the state of Alabama had the most Ashley Madison subscribers; however, it is also the first state listed on the drop-down menu. D.C. was third on the list. Virginia is number 10 out of 51. In the same article, Business Insider revealed that 15,000 emails were either linked to the U.S. military or government.
