Train Hits Another Tractor Trailer on Route 29 Crossing in Gainesville

Posted

Mere weeks before the Virginia Department of Transportation opens the newly-constructed bridge over the U.S. Route 29 railroad tracks in Gainesville, police report an accident on Lee Highway Friday evening involving a Norfolk Southern train and an 18-wheel tractor trailer.

This is the fifth such accident to occur in the past two years.

The police report no injuries; however, they expect major delays on U.S. Route 29. I-66 Westbound Ramp is shutdown. They offer no estimate when the road might reopen.

Northern Virginia Fire Buffs reports on their Facebook page that the train struck the trailer of a tractor trailer carrying frozen Chinese food.

The Virginia Department of Transportation will eliminate the at-grade railroad crossings in Gainesville when the bridge over the tracks opens Aug. 16-18.
