VDOT Asks Drivers to Prepare for Potentially Hazardous Commutes

Posted

VDOT PlowsThe Virginia Department of Transportation crews are preparing for late winter snow tonight through tomorrow morning, ahead of a Winter Weather Advisory, which was issued by the National Weather Service earlier today.

The advisory is in effect from 10 p.m. through 10 a.m. Friday morning.

"Precipitation will move initially as a rain and snow mix early evening, transitioning to all snow late this evening," the weather service said. "Snow is expected overnight, impacting the morning commute, eventually tapering off by Midday Friday."

VDOT  says the storm could impact traffic tonight through Friday morning with up to several inches of snow.

"Yesterday, crews spread anti-icing materials on interstates and major roads and are finishing preparations today," VDOT spokesperson Ellen Kamilakis said. "If possible, delay trips until after the a.m. rush hour Friday to avoid potential slushy road conditions."

According to VDOT, crews will be staged along major roads to handle the afternoon rush hour today; they will increase up to about 1,400 trucks to treat roads overnight and through the morning rush hour.

"Some crews will also be on alert through the weekend for possible refreeze," she said.
