Following a very messy Saturday storm, the Virginia Department of Transportation urges drivers to be alert to the changing road conditions across the region Sunday as snow begins to melt.
While crews made significant progress plowing roads across northern Virginia overnight, slush and high water will result from temperatures in the mid to high 40s.
According to VDOT, intertstates and primary roads in Fairfax are clear and wet; crews continue some snow cleanup on primary and secondary roads in Western Prince William and Loudoun counties who saw much more snow. "Pavement temperatures are still hovering at freezing but should rise later in the day; a VDOT spokesperson said. "Crews are already seeing standing water on some roads; as snow melts, drivers are asked to be cautious of this ponding, particularly in right lanes. They said crews are also clearing clogged drains.
Crews have visited most neighborhoods in the area and are prepared to make a second pass; however, roads will not be bare pavement.
"Roads should be passable with caution via an eight- to ten-foot path, but may remain snow-packed," they said.
VDOT asks residents to park in your driveway or on the odd-numbered side of the street to allow plows room to pass.
