VDOT Prepares Public for Route 29 Traffic Switch

The Virginia Department of Transportation plans to move Route 29 traffic onto the newly constructed bridge over the railroad tracks in Gainesville Aug. 16-18.

To prepare residents for the traffic switch, VDOT invites the public to hear details about the transition July 31 at 6 p.m. in the vacant storefront between the Sports Authority and Golfsmith in the Virginia Gateway shopping center.

The traffic switch will begin Friday night, Aug. 16, through noon, Sunday, Aug. 18., and will cause delays of up to an hour on roads in Gainesville.

“During that time, only one lane will be open in each direction on Route 29 and Linton Hall Road,” VDOT spokesperson Joan Morris said. “Motorists can avoid major delays by using I-66.”

VDOT will post message signs to alert motorists of the closures and delays well in advance of the weekend work, she said.
