VDOT Warns of Major Commuting Issues Wednesday

Posted

traffic jamThe Virginia Department of Transportations warned residents to prepare for for increased congestion on major travel routes and strongly consider alternate plans Wednesday morning ahead of a 24-hour suspension of Metrorail service for emergency inspections.

"At this time, high occupancy vehicle (HOV) rush-hour restrictions will remain in place on I-66 and I-395, to encourage and accommodate additional ridesharing," VDOT spokesperson Jennifer McCord said.

To help traffic flow, she said VDOT’s Traffic Operations Center will actively monitor conditions throughout the day and adjust signal timing where possible.

Crews will also limit lane closures on interstates and major commuter routes.

To help alleviate traffic volume, VDOT asks that drivers and Metro users to consider Telework, adjusting work and commute schedules, carpool or use bus service or Virginia Railway Express.

"If driving, remain alert to increased traffic, and plan for a longer trip," she said.

Residents can monitor current I-95/395 corridor travel times for bus, VRE and HOV at VDOT’s 511 northern Virginia commuter page: www.511virginia.org/nova. They can also get information on commuting resources, carpooling and HOV rules in northern Virginia.
