Posted

Besides the usual safety warnings issued to Trick or Treaters on Halloween: watch out for moving vehicles, cross streets at corners, wear bright clothing and safety check all loose candy, this year offers is a very real and immediate threat: downed power lines.

Knowing what dangers currently exist on the roads and wooded areas in Northern Virginia, Vice President of Public Relations, Mike Curtis cautions parents and teens about Trick or Treating.

“This year, Halloween is dangerous. If you do allow children to go out for Trick or Treat, accompany them and be extra careful. There may still be downed power lines in your neighborhood.”

Curtis cautions that not all downed power lines are easily visible, especially at night.

“If you see a tree or debris on the ground, don’t touch it. It may be covering a power line. All downed lines should be treated as live.”

Curtis warns it is extremely dangerous to walk even near downed power lines, as currents may travel through water on he ground.

“Walking on wet ground anywhere near a live line can be fatal. If you see anything suspicious, call NOVEC at 703-335-0500 or 1-888-335-0500 immediately.”

To stay safe, Trick or Treaters may want to stick to neighborhoods with underground electrical wires, or visit a local Trunk or Treat or Halloween party.
