Closures will last up to 30 minutes. VDOT will also partially close lanes starting 11 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday to set up equipment. "Between 11 p.m. and midnight Wednesday and 11 p.m. and midnight Thursday, partial lane and shoulder closures will occur in order to set up the crane," VDOT spokesman Mike Murphy said in a press release. VDOT announced the probability of lane closures early November 2014. The traffic system will begin operating between Route 29 in Centreville and the Capital Beltway in early 2015. “The closures are part of the Virginia Department of Transportation’s ongoing effort to install 36 new gantries as part of the I-66 Active Traffic Management System (ATMS),” VDOT said. “The first gantry went up in mid-November on I-66 East just before Route 28.”
VDOT announced that they will post message signs in advance of the work so that motorists can plan alternate routes. Residents can go to the VDOT website for more information on the project.
