While conditions will improve throughout the day, the National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch through Tuesday evening ahead of inconsistent warming patterns throughout the region.

"Warm air is quickly but erratically warming temperatures across the region." the weather service said.  "Temperatures near 50 are being reported in close proximity to locations still near freezing at 7 am."

NWS suggests residents use caution walking and driving between 7 and 9 a.m. as icy sidewalks and roads continue to melt this morning.

"What that means for your travels is that some areas will be wet and others will stay icy for a little while longer," they said.

The Virginia Department of Transportation also advises delaying travel this morning, until pavement temperatures rise.

"Crews continue treating roads glazed by overnight freezing rain, and as of 5:30 a.m., roads in northern Virginia range from wet, to slushy, to ice-covered, but all pavement has the potential to be slick and dangerous," VDOT spokesperson Jennifer McCord said.

As a low pressure system moves across the region today, heavy rain is forecasted before noon with totals expected to range between 1 to 1.5 inches west of the interstate 95 corridor.

"This heavy rainfall coupled with snow melt will lead to the potential of small streams and tributaries in the watch area to overflow their banks; small streams and tributaries may overflow their banks," they said.

The potential for the most severe flooding will be from Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday evening.

Warmer temperatures and clear skies are forecasted through the weekend, NWS said.

Bristow Beat will continue to monitor the weather situation.
