NWS Issues Statement about Low Wind Chill Friday

Updated: Jan. 3, 9 a.m.

In a special weather statement issued Friday morning, the National Weather Service warns of "dangerously low wind chills" across the region.

NWS has cancelled a local Wind Advisory; however, winds will be strong and gusty throughout the day.

According to NWS, the combination of cold temperatures in the teens and northwest winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts of 45 to 50 mph will produce wind chills values near or below zero.

"Potentially colder weather may impact the area next week with wind chill values below zero Monday night through Tuesday night,"  they said.

NWS also cautions that motorists should be especially careful Friday of untreated secondary roads, including bridges and overpasses, and pedestrians should watch out for slippery sidewalks and parking lots.

Original Story:

While snow accumulations from Thursday night's weather system are on everyone's mind, the National Weather Service also warns of chilling temperatures in the region, possibly reaching single digits Friday.

"The bigger story may turn out to be the cold and wind, which will be in its early stages of arrival overnight Thursday, a NWS forecaster said. "Wind chill advisories will likely be needed in the highlands, but it is too early to issue this yet."

Friday will be sunny, with a high only of 27 degrees, with a blustery northwest wind 16 to 22 mph.

"Single-digit lows likely over many parts of the forecast area west of I-95. Along and east of I-95 lows will drop into the low to mid-teens," they said.

NWS warns that some of the coldest areas could see wind chills drop to near or slightly below zero.

Temperatures should return to above freezing Saturday.
