NWS Issues Winter Weather Advisory for Monday, Tuesday

Posted

BusinSnow2The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory from 10 p.m. Monday night until late Tuesday ahead of a storm that will drop several inches of snow on the region.

NWS reports residents could see one to three inches locally, with higher amounts in the northwest suburbs.

"A mixture of rain and snow will develop this evening; precipitation will turn to all snow around or shortly after midnight," they said. " Periods of snow will continue int Tuesday and the advisory may need to be extended."

The weather service warns of snow covered roads and travel disruptions over the next couple of days; temperatures will hover in the lower to mid 30s.

The Virginia Department of Transportation is asking drivers to monitor forecasts for changes or heavier weather bands that may impact their schedule and consider telework, delaying their commutes or allowing extra time for driving.

"Crews have treated interstates and major roads in Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William counties with brine and liquid magnesium chloride in advance of the snow," VDOT spokesperson Jennifer McCord said. "Tonight, about 1,450 trucks will pre-deploy along interstates, main roads and neighborhood streets; they will remain on duty to plow and treat roads through the day Tuesday."

In his Weather Beat column, Bristow weatherman John Biggs forecasts sleet and snow Tuesday, with a few snow showers lingering into Wednesday with no additional accumulation.

Bristow Beat will continue to monitor the weather.
