An approaching weather system could complicate life in Prince William County as residents prepare to hit the roads for Thanksgiving.

Ahead of a system that could bring snow, sleet and freezing rain Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory, which is in effect from 4 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Forecasters predict that the precipitation will begin as a brief period of snow and sleet late tonight and early Tuesday.

"The precipitation is expected to change to freezing rain by midmorning Tuesday and continue as freezing rain into early Tuesday afternoon," NWS reported.

The service expects up to an inch of snow and sleet by early Tuesday morning , followed by around a tenth of an inch of freezing rain by the afternoon.

Temperatures are expected to reach the 40's.

Heavy rain will continue Tuesday night with a possible accumulation of 1-2 inches. The chance of precipitation is 100 percent.

Rain showers will continue until noon Wednesday, then rain and snow showers are likely. With temperatures near 41 degrees, new precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch are possible.

The combination of snow and ice throughout this weather event will make for hazardous driving.
