The Virginia Department of Transportation is warning drivers to stay off the roads or use extreme caution this weekend ahead of potential snow and sleet during Friday's evening commute.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory from 6 p.m. until midnight.

NWS is forecasting of an inch to a coating of snow Friday that could stick to untreated surfaces.

"Untreated roads will become snow covered and icy this evening, making travel difficult," the weather service said.

According to VDOT, crews began treating roads in advance yesterday and will finish before the storm hits the area this evening.

"With below-freezing temperatures in place and snow showers expected to begin as early as 5 p.m., VDOT will have 1,150 trucks deployed to continually treat roads by early afternoon," VDOT Spokesperson Jennifer McCord said.

Those looking to leave the area for the three-day weekend, VDOT suggests leaving early today if possible and be off the road prior to the storm to avoid icy conditions and give crews room to work.

Temperatures this weekend are also forecasted to be extremely cold and blustery. Saturday will feature a high near 23, with winds 21-23 mph and gusts up to 36 mph.

The lows Saturday night could reach 9 degrees, with wind chill values as low as -5

"Icy conditions are possible through the rush hour and overnight; with icy patches possible through the weekend given the low temperatures forecasted," McCord said.
