VDOT Warns of Difficult Wednesday P.M. Commute; Winter Weather Advisory Issued

VDOT PlowsThe Virginia Department of Transportation warns residents to expect slippery roads and low visibility Wednesday evening when snow squalls with heavy bands of snow could quickly cover roads, reduce visibility and make driving treacherous in the area.

A Winter Weather Advisory was issued for 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon until 9 p.m. and a Wind Chill Advisory is in effect from midnight to 6 p.m. Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service, motorists will need to use extreme caution  as snow showers will develop this afternoon; the heaviest snow showers and squalls will be between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. "At noon today the Virginia Department of Transportation will mobilize 700 trucks in northern Virginia in anticipation of the additional layer of precipitation that will freeze," a VDOT spokesperson said.
VDOT is also monitoring dangerously low temperatures late tonight into Thursday. "Extremely low temperatures tonight and the remainder of the week will continue to pose challenges with refreeze," they said. "Some crews will remain on duty overnight to treat with problem spots."
