WEATHER BEAT: Erika Tracking Towards Southwest Florida; Minimal Impacts Locally

Posted

weatherbeatlogoI hope everyone has had a chance to get out and enjoy the nice weather. You may be asking, "What does the weatherman do when it's so nice outside?" Well, we go elsewhere and right now our attention is Tropical Storm Erika, which may only be a depression by the time you read this.

Erika is currently dealing with an unfavorable environment near the Dominican Republic and Haiti, and this storm will likely be downgraded to a depression. Once it crosses Cuba, it will enter into a more favorable environment allowing it to strengthen. The greatest threat for Florida is much of the west coast of that state. The track is currently shifting towards the west, so a storm that stays in the Gulf of Mexico could mean a more potent tropical storm. I do not expect it to reach hurricane status at this time.

The greatest threat for Florida appears to be heavy rain more than anything. The strongest winds will be right at the coast.

For our area, we could see some moisture out of this, but at this time, I am not expecting any significant impacts from Erika.

Please stay tuned for more updates on Erika.

My favorite thing to do is study the weather. It is truly fascinating. Nothing beats a good thunderstorm. I became very interested in weather when I lived in Okinawa, Japan for four years and was actually inside a super typhoon.
