WEATHER BEAT: Freezing Rain Tuesday Night Into Wednesday; Snow Possible This Weekend

Posted

On Sunday, the groundhog predicted six more weeks of winter, and in my opinion, that was a good call. After we get through this week, you’ll see what I mean.

With that said, this week, we are dealing with three storms, the first storm which moved out Monday afternoon was more of a rain event for the immediate Bristow area. We had a little snow, but it amounted to nothing. This likely will not be the case for the second storm as we are expecting a period of sleet, freezing rain, and even a little snow to develop overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning. As of Monday evening, this storm is over Texas and will be moving in our direction during the day on Tuesday. Meanwhile, another area of low pressure is developing off the coast, and when these two systems merge together, it will intensify and bring us a wintry mix. We will likely see anywhere from a tenth of an inch to a quarter of an inch of ice accumulation overnight.

The third storm I am referring to will arrive this weekend. There have recently been rumors that this storm could drop as much as three feet of snow across the area. That is simply not the case. While it is too early to predict snow totals at this time, I’m quite positive that we can rule out any outrageous snow totals. The weekend storm will all depend on how much cold air we have in place. If it isn’t cold enough, we could have a period of sleet, which would lower snow totals. What I’ve learned from top meteorologists is that cold arctic air is key, something that will be missing from this storm. Overall, February is already trending warmer than January, and this trend is expected to continue.

Outside of those three storms, we can expect nice weather on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, so enjoy those three days. We will have another update on the third storm as we get closer to the weekend.

“My favorite thing to do is study the weather. It is truly fascinating. Nothing beats a good thunderstorm. I became very interested in weather when I lived in Okinawa, Japan for four years and was actually inside a super typhoon.”
