WEATHER BEAT: Icy Conditions Expected Tuesday Morning

Posted

Just in time for the busiest travel day of the year, our first winter storm of the season could pack quite a punch for Northern Virginia come Tuesday morning.

As of now, I am expecting a brief period of accumulating snow, but this will quickly transition into sleet, followed by a period of freezing rain, before finally turning to just plain old fashion rain by Tuesday afternoon. Tuesday afternoon’s rain could be another story in itself as we could see as much as 2 inches or more of rainfall. This system has a lot of moisture to work with.

Looking ahead to Wednesday, I am expecting rain showers in the morning. Once again, we could see another inch or more of rainfall. In addition, the storm could end as a brief period of snow by Wednesday afternoon as the cold air begins to filter back in. We are not expecting any major accumulations, but this is still something to keep be mindful of.

Now for Thanksgiving itself, the weather will be sunny and dry, but very cold. We are only expecting highs in the mid-30s Thanksgiving Day. Black Friday looks dry and sunny as well, but still cold. Our next chance for precipitation is Monday, in the form of rain.

Stay safe in the wintry weather and have a safe and happy Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends.

“My favorite thing to do is study the weather. It is truly fascinating. Nothing beats a good thunderstorm. I became very interested in weather when I lived in Okinawa, Japan for four years and was actually inside a super typhoon.”
