WEATHER BEAT: Mixture of Snow, Ice, and Rain Could Impact Region this Winter

Posted

weatherbeatlogoAs we enter December, we have seen that much of the Northeast has been extremely mild with very little snowfall. Even areas to our north that typically see snow by now have seen little to no snow so far this season. With that said, you should still not let your guard down.

Back in October, I forecasted three to six inches of snow to fall in December. I also stated that it would fall towards the end of the month. Has this changed?

While I am making adjustments to my winter forecast, I am not totally scaling back. The potential for a foot or more of snow this season is still a possibility. I also believe that El Nino will weaken slightly which has me thinking that January and February have the potential to produce significant snows. I do not expect another “Snowmaggedon,” but the potential for up to a foot or more of snow exists between January and February.

With the mild temperatures we have seen so far this season, the threat for ice also exists. I suspect we will see more ice events than snow this season. Also, despite the winter season, old fashion rain will also make its presence this winter. I suspect many tough forecasts ahead.

For much of December, you can expect high temperatures ranging from the mid-50s to the mid-40s. Towards the end of the month, I expect to see high temperatures drop to the 30s with a chance for snow or ice. I expect to see at least one day of wintry precipitation before the year ends.

Get out and enjoy the weather and have a safe holiday season!

My favorite thing to do is study the weather. It is truly fascinating. Nothing beats a good thunderstorm. I became very interested in weather when I lived in Okinawa, Japan for four years and was actually inside a super typhoon.
