WEATHER BEAT: Rain, Sleet, Snow to Impact Weekend Plans

Posted

weatherbeatlogoOne of the hardest things to forecast in a place like Virginia is winter weather. With that said, the storm that was supposed to make a lot of people happy is now looking like yet another disappointment.

Say goodbye to the thoughts of building snowmen and spending the weekend sledding down the many hills in our beautiful neighborhoods and hello to the thought of a rainy Saturday with possibly a touch of snow if you’re lucky.

Your Friday evening will now feature a wintry mix that will move into the region giving us some snow and sleet, but the wintry precipitation will quickly turn to liquid form, and most of Saturday now looks to be rainy.

Eventually, the storm will begin to pull away and strengthen off the Jersey shore allowing for some wrap around cold air to enter the storm. How quickly the cold air wraps into the back of the storm will determine how much accumulation we see. If we’re lucky, enough cold air could allow for up to an inch of accumulation.

Meanwhile, areas between Philadelphia and Boston could see several inches from this same storm as it begins to strengthen and produce its own cold air.

Despite this disappointing news, snow lovers should remain hopeful as we make our way into February, which is statistically the snowiest month of the year.

My favorite thing to do is study the weather. It is truly fascinating. Nothing beats a good thunderstorm. I became very interested in weather when I lived in Okinawa, Japan for four years and was actually inside a super typhoon.
