WEATHER BEAT: Rare Roll Cloud Spotted; Sunny Stretch through Friday

Posted

Ready or not, here comes autumn! The autumnal equinox will occur on Sunday, Sept. 22, at 4:44 p.m.

Along with a few showers Monday morning, many of you may have also noticed a rare cloud. We received several sightings of the rare roll cloud. Trevor Wright was one who just happened to catch the rare sighting on his way down I-66 Monday morning. This cloud was spotted throughout northern Virginia. Bill Hein was out shopping at Potomac Mills in Woodbridge when he sighted the cloud.

What is a roll cloud you ask? A roll cloud is just that, a cloud that rolls across the sky in a tubular fashion, typically ahead of a frontal passage.

Will we see anymore roll clouds this week? Probably not, but I cannot rule out a few cirrus or even a few altostratus clouds on Tuesday. We will likely see highs in the low 70s on Tuesday. I am expecting similar conditions Wednesday through Friday, with slightly warmer temperatures near 80 degrees toward the end of the week. A few storms are expected over the weekend, but I’m not expecting a washout. Cooler temperatures in the 70s return early next week.

My advice to you: get out and enjoy the last few days of summer, and as always, stay tuned for more.

“My favorite thing to do is study the weather. It is truly fascinating. Nothing beats a good thunderstorm. I became very interested in weather when I lived in Okinawa, Japan, for four years and was actually inside a super typhoon.”
