WEATHER BEAT: Tropical Storm Andrea Expected to Bring Rain Thursday and Friday

Posted

As of Wednesday night, we are currently tracking our first christened storm of the season, Tropical Storm Andrea.

Currently, Tropical Storm Andrea sits about 300 miles off the coast of Florida in the Gulf of Mexico, but because most of the storm is displaced from the center, much of Florida is already dealing with tropical storm- force winds and heavy rain. Florida could see up to 5 inches or more of rainfall from this storm.

Once the storm crosses Florida, a trough that is currently developing in the East will rapidly send it moving up the east coast, and as a result of that, we could see tropical storm force winds and heavy rain from the coast of Florida to North Carolina.

Most likely, by the time Tropical Storm Andrea reaches the Virginia latitude, it will not be a tropical storm anymore; however, we could still see heavy rainfall due to the tropical moisture associated with this storm.

Here in Bristow, Friday will most likely shape up to be a wet day, but most of the wind and heavy rain will remain east of I-95. On Thursday afternoon, we are actually expecting some rain associated with another system. These two systems combined are what will cause our heavy rain for Friday. We may see a few additional showers on Saturday, but the showers will quickly end as the storm rapidly makes its way up the east coast toward Canada and beyond.

Stay tuned and prepare for a rainy Friday.

“My favorite thing to do is study the weather. It is truly fascinating. Nothing beats a good thunderstorm. I became very interested in weather when I lived in Okinawa, Japan, for four years and was actually inside a super typhoon.”
