WEATHER BEAT: Tropical Storm Arthur Shouldn't Affect Local Celebrations

Posted

Welcome to the dog days of summer, also known as July. July is statistically the hottest month of the year. With the hot temperatures also comes hot ocean waters, and one thing that thrives in hot ocean waters are tropical cyclones, and that’s exactly what we have right now.

Tropical Storm Arthur, our first named storm of the season formed off the east coast of Florida Tuesday afternoon. Arthur is expected to make a northward track up towards the Carolinas, then as Arthur and an approaching cool front collide, he will be forced northeastward and eventually out to sea. Some models want to turn Arthur into a hurricane once it reaches North Carolina. Even as a hurricane, the biggest threat from Arthur will be high surf and beach erosion.

Typically, I wouldn’t focus this much on a storm that will have little impact on our region, but I know some people’s Fourth of July plans will take you to the beaches. If you have plans to visit any of the beaches in Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, and southeastern Virginia between now and Friday, you will need to keep a close eye on Arthur. There may be some restrictions at beaches in these areas as high surf and beach erosion are real concerns. Also breezy conditions and rain will be likely along the coast. I feel confident that once you reach the Delmarva Peninsula and beyond, affects from Arthur should be minimal.

Locally, I am expecting great weather for our Fourth of July. Any outdoor plans you may have should go on without any issues.

Please stay tuned for updates on Tropical Storm Arthur and I hope everybody has a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July holiday.

My favorite thing to do is study the weather. It is truly fascinating. Nothing beats a good thunderstorm. I became very interested in weather when I lived in Okinawa, Japan for four years and was actually inside a super typhoon.”
