WEATHER BEAT: Winter Comeback Brings Chance for More Snow and Colder Temps

Posted

As we enter the new season, I would just like to wish everybody a happy spring! With that said, models are indicating a chance of snow as well as much colder temperatures for the beginning of next week. Sorry to say, but no, this is not an April Fools joke!

We are currently tracking arctic air and a piece of energy coming down from Canada following the jet stream. Another thing we are watching is the positive tilt in the trough. Basically what this means is that if the trough is positively tilted, this means less snow for our region. For snow lovers, you want a negative tilt to usher in more moisture from the Atlantic. We are eventually expecting a negative tilt, but that may not occur until after the energy is to our north. Another key ingredient is a storm that is expected to form off the coast of the Carolinas. Based on the latest data, the thinking is that the storm will move up the coast, with the highest impacts being along the New Jersey shore.

I know that was a lot to take in, but basically I am not expecting a major snowstorm out of this based on the latest model runs. My thinking is that most of the energy and snow is north of Baltimore with quite a bit of snow impacting much of New Jersey and up into New York City. I am hesitant to post snow totals as we are still quite a ways out, but to put everything into perspective, based on the current model runs, we would get anywhere from 1-3 inches of snow locally. This estimation is based on factors such as amount of sun, temperature, time of day, intensity of precipitation, etc.

The moment all snow haters have been waiting for has finally arrived. I am going to say with 95 percent confidence that this is most likely our last chance for significant snow of the season. I can’t necessarily say the same about cold temperatures, though.

“My favorite thing to do is study the weather. It is truly fascinating. Nothing beats a good thunderstorm. I became very interested in weather when I lived in Okinawa, Japan for four years and was actually inside a super typhoon.”
