UPDATED: NWS Warns of Black Ice

As temperatures will continue to fall below freezing this evening across the area, the National Weather Service has issued a special statement about black ice.

"Any surfaces that were previously wet or slushy during the day will freeze over tonight," NWS said. "Be especially cautious for black ice when traveling on secondary roads, bridges, overpasses and other untreated surfaces."

According to Joan Morris, spokesperson for the Virginia Department of Transportation, crews will be working overnight to deal with the refreeze.

The National Weather Service has downgraded the Winter Storm Warning to an Advisory.

NWS now estimates snow accumulations in the area will be around 3 inches.

Over 2 inches of snow has fallen in Bristow as of 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Bristow weatherman John Biggs is reporting that the area will get upwards of 3-6 inches of snow until about 1-2 p.m., then clearing for the afternoon.

"We could see a glimmer of sunshine before today is over," Biggs said.

The Prince William County Police Department is urging residents to limit discretionary travel today.

"Road crews have been working tirelessly to make roadways safe for travel," They posted on Facebook. "If you must travel today, please do so carefully."

Most area schools are closed Tuesday morning ahead of a snow storm that could bring 4 to 6 inches of snow to Prince William County.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning until 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

According to NWS, precipitation will begin at dawn as a snow/sleet mix, but will become heavier as the storm progresses. The heaviest snow will come between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m., where residents could see accumulations of 1-2 inches per hour.

Temperatures will remain in the lower 30's throughout the day.

"A Winter Storm Warning for snow means severe winter weather conditions are expected. Significant amounts of snow will make travel hazardous," NWS said.
