Winter Weather Advisory for DC Metro Area Friday Evening

Posted

sleet roadAccording to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, there is a winter weather advisory expected to go into effect at 6 p.m. this evening, Jan. 23.

A hazardous weather outlook is also in effect, and hazardous conditions are expected to stay until noon Saturday.

Currently, it is 30 degrees F, sunny with calm winds. However, that is expected to change throughout the day.

According to the National Weather Service, there is a 50 percent chance of rain today, changing to a 100 percent chance of snow and sleet overnight. Temperatures should remain around 30 degrees throughout the day and into the night.

Rain, snow and sleet should begin to fall before midnight. More rain is expected during the overnight hours. That rain is expected to turn to sleet again in the very early morning hours, and continue to fall into midday Saturday.

The NWS predicts Saturday will be a wintery mix with a high of 39 degrees. The chance of a wintery mix is 70 percent. Winds will also pick up Saturday with gusts as high as 21 miles per hour.

The wintery weather should clear up by Saturday night, and Sunday is expected to be partially sunny. However, there is a 40 percent chance that snow and sleet will return Sunday night. Conditions of rain and snow may continue into Monday although temperatures might inch just above freezing.

The winter weather advisory is in effect at 6 p.m. for most of the Washington and Baltimore metropolitan areas including Northern Virginia and Southern Maryland.

A wintery mix can often make roads more slippery than snow when temperatures are below freezing, so drivers should take precaution.

Our local weatherman, John Biggs, predicts it will not be the kind of snow that is scenic, nor conducive to outside play. Residents may have to hunker down until Sunday, when the forecast is much sunnier.
