Vice President Kamala Harris-D Wins Virginia, but Donald Trump takes back the White House.

Trump exceeded expectations in last night’s exit polls. He currently has 277 electoral votes, enough to take back the White House, but in Virginia, the Democrats were the winners.

The Associated Press declared Virginia a win for Vice President Kamala Harris-D with 95% of the votes counted. Harris secured 2,226,124 votes (51.7%). Donald Trump-R received 2,001,274 (46.5%).

Harris did not fare as well as President Joe Biden in 2020 when he won Virginia by 54.1%. She fell short of reaching Biden’s numbers across the country. Inflation is being touted as the number one reason independent voters supported Trump.

Sen. Tim Kaine-D won reelection by a fair margin (54.1%) with 2,302,022 votes. Hung Cao, Republican, received 1,953,769 votes (45.9%).

Kaine was first elected to the Senate in 2012 and has served in Congress since 2013. He was Hillary Clinton’s running mate in 2016 (and recently appeared on SNL as himself.) Republicans have won control of the Senate so Kaine will be in the minority.

Democrats continued to make strides in Virginia elections for the U.S. House of Representatives.

In District 10, Suhas Subramnyam-D won with 207,131 (52.1%). Republican Mike Clancy received 190,227 (47.9%).  The 10th District includes Loudoun County, the western part of Prince William County, Fauquier County and Rappahannock County.

In District 11, incumbent Gerry Connolly-D won handily with 259,487 votes (66.8%). Republican Mike Van Meter received 129,094. District 11 covers most of Fairfax County.

Eugene Vindman-D won the 7th District, which includes eastern Prince William County, Culpeper and Fredericksburg, with 51.1% of the vote (195,349.) The seat was formerly held by Abigail Spanberger-D who plans to run for governor of Virginia. Republican Derreck Anderson received 48.79% of the votes.
