Primrose School of Bristow Holds Student Election

The 2016 campaign season is over for Pre-Kindergarten and Explorer students at the Primrose School of Bristow. Students, teachers and staff pulled out all the stops as two well-known Primrose candidates vied for the title of the presidential Primrose Friend mascot: Percy the rooster and Billy the duck. (Percy won.)

Also on the ballot: which official presidential snack students would enjoy in the afternoon.

Franchise Owner of Primrose School in Bristow, Tom Cheng, explained that the student election is just one example of how Primrose children begin to learn responsibilities through participation in activities and projects that help them become aware of friends in their classroom and of the larger community.

“At Primrose, Election Day isn’t about who wins or loses,” said Cheng. “It’s organized to help our students understand the importance of civic involvement and citizenship at an early age.”

On Election Day, each Pre-K and Explorer student received an opportunity to cast a vote for his or her favorite Primrose Friend mascot as well as a favorite snack to be shared following the vote, which helped to teach them about the democratic process.

“We want children to enjoy giving back to their local community. Voting is a great way for each of them to get involved and feel connected. Plus, by letting them vote for their afternoon snack, it shows them how voting can impact real life,” Cheng said.

He hopes the school election became a topic that many students discussed their with families over the dinner table leading up to the presidential election.

The Primrose Election Day event included Site Director Iris Costantino reading to the students, followed by actual voting for the presidential Primrose Friend mascot.

After casting their vote, students received “I Voted!” stickers, so to feel proud of their participation in the democratic process.
