Prince William County Fire & Rescue Units were dispatched to the 10200 block of Ballsford Road in Manassas, Thursday evening, in response to a house fire.

Crews arrived at 9 p.m., at the single-family home, to find a working basement fire with all occupants out of the home Fire Marshal Matt Smolsky said.

The structure sustained extensive damage and building, and building officials declared it unsafe for occupation. No injuries were reported.

The Red Cross is assisting the five adults and five children who were displaced.

The Fire Marshal’s Office is continuing to investigate the cause of the fire; thus far, fire investigators have determined it to be accidental.

Smolsky said the occupants were at home at the time of the fire. Smoke detectors in the home were not working. Fortunately, residents were able to exit the house without injury.

The Fire Marshal wants to remind readers about the importance of smoke detectors.

"Smoke detectors save lives. All residential properties should be protected by working smoke detectors. If you need assistance obtaining smoke detectors, please contact your local fire station," Smolsky said.
