The Prince William County School Board voted Dec. 16 to once again begin the school year prior to Labor Day.

In a unanimous vote, board members approved the 2016-2017 school calendar to open Monday, Aug. 29, 2016 and conclude Thursday, June 15, 2017 for students.

PWCS will once again close three days for Thanksgiving holiday, but not include a full two weeks for winter break. Schools would close from Thursday, Dec. 22 to Jan.2, 2017. School would reopen, Tuesday, Jan. 3.

Spring break for students would be from April 10‐17 (April 7 would be a teacher workday).

Since PWCS still qualifies for a pre‐Labor Day opening next year, school division staff presented the Board Dec. 2 with two options for opening school, one before and one after Labor Day 2016.

"Overall, I think  the pre-Labor Day option has been a success for us this year," Brentsville District School Board Representative Gil Trenum said. "The two week winter break at Christmas time would be a good thing to try for."

The initial draft of the full approved calendar is located here.
