Personal finance website NerdWallet.com has declared Gainesville as Virginia’s number one city for young families ahead of other Northern Virginia cities such as Falls Church, Vienna, Chantilly, Centreville and Lorton.

The website took into account home affordability, prosperity and growth, the quality of education and even family friendliness when they evaluated locations across the state.

According to Nerd Wallet, "With a population of 11,863, Gainesville is the smallest place in the top 10, but families love this Prince William County city: 40% of households are families with children, the highest mark in the state."

The website also wrote that Gainesville is more expensive than many other cities, with median home values at $408,100.

"But for the cost, Gainesville provides not only the most family-oriented community in the state, but also excellent schools, with an 8 out of 10 from GreatSchools," they said.

Board of County Supervisors Chairman At-Large Corey Stewart posted on the county website that the support for public education and investments in western Prince William's infrastructure and amenities are the keys to Gainesville's success.

“Prince William County is dedicated to building a community to support the needs of young families,” he said. “Our commitment to improved transportation corridors, our investment in community parks and libraries, and our support for quality public schools has made western Prince William County and the Gainesville area one of the fastest-growing, and obviously, one of the most desired communities in Virginia.”

Gainesville District Supervisor Peter Candland said he wasn't surprised at Nerd Wallet's ranking of Gainesville.

Gainesville is a great place to live, work, and play. We have parks, schools, churches, and shopping so conveniently located that families can spend more time together and less time traveling to and from various events. Part of what makes Gainesville so great is a real sense of community within our neighborhoods and schools. Families can find a place to belong and become actively involved in the community. With the scenic Bull Run Mountains and the beauty of the Rural Crescent as backdrops, Gainesville combines the best of suburbia and wide open spaces. It is an idyllic slice of heaven right here in northern Virginia.

Burke, Centreville, Vienna, Bon Air round out the top five on Nerd Wallet's list. Leesburg is seven and Chantilly is nine.

Nerd Wallet pulled data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2013 American Community Survey to rank the cities. For more information about the list, click here.
