The Virginia Department of Transportation announced that crews need to close a lane of I-66 between Nutley Street and I-495 for emergency roadway repair.

The lane closure will affect traffic traveling through the Wednesday morning rush hour.

"Motorists on eastbound I-66 can expect major delays during the morning rush tomorrow as the right shoulder ‘X’ lane between Nutley Street and I-495 will be closed as repairs are made to the concrete foundation of an overhead gantry for the under-construction Active Traffic Management System,"  Virginia Department of Transportation spokesman Mike Murphy said in a release late Tuesday.

The ‘X’ lane and the right regular lane of I-66 East in this stretch of I-66 closed beginning at 10 p.m. Tuesday.

"The regular lane will reopen before 5 a.m. Wednesday," Murphy said.  "The ‘X’ lane is likely to remain closed through the morning rush."

Motorists should anticipate delays in this area and allow extra time for their morning commutes.

VDOT is expecting completion of the $38.6 million Active Traffic Management System this fall.
