Weekend Beat: Dance Your Nine to Five Blues Away

Posted

Last weekend we had you rocking; this weekend we’ll have you dancing. As August begins, set your calendar with a great mix of family fun and adult-only date-night events.

Just make sure to shine your dancing shoes!

Friday, Aug 3

Get ready to line dance. Friends Uniting Nokesville (FUN) is holding a “Hoe-Down” at 6 p.m. at the Bristow Chick-fil-A. The money raised will be used to restore the Hawkins Barn on Nokesville Rd. Yes, that is the barn with the dancing cow, duck and pig. But what does that mean for you? How about fun for you and your family with music by Jed Duvall as Johnny Cash, a bounce house for kids, and an outdoor movie at dusk? Chick-fil-A Bristow is located at 9939 Sowder Village Sq. in Manassas along Rt. 28. A portion of food sales will be donated to the organization; ask for a flyer.

Later that night celebrate the end of the week with great alternative music by Story for Hire, a great local alternative band at Lion and Bull at 5351 Merchants View Square in Haymarket. Story for Hire will remind you of your favorite bands, such as Foo Fighters, Sevendust and Motley Crue. Also enjoy great food and ale at Lion and Bull, and feel free to dance, or head bang, but you may want to refrain from starting a mosh pit.

Saturday, Aug 4

Keep the kiddies cool on this summer afternoon with an open swim at Splash Down Water Park on 7500 Ben Lomond Park Drive in Manassas. Splash Down is an ideal park for young children and adults with a lazy river, 25-meter lap pool, four slides, bubblers and fountains. It is the largest water park in Virginia, and it is right down the road from Bristow!

After keeping it cool, it may be time to turn up the heat. As the evening approaches, head to the Harris Pavilion on 9116 Center St. in Manassas for something hot! The Summer Sounds Concert series is featuring Le Hotclub de Biglick from 6:30-8 p.m. Dance to their Gypsy Jazz sounds, and create a romantically intriguing vibe for a hot August night with your honey! Summer Sounds Concert series is brought to you by the Center for the Arts.

Sunday, Aug 5

If you could not get out to the Harris Pavilion on Saturday, you can still spend your Sunday at the Harris Pavilion celebrating an American tradition, the Ice Cream Social. From 3-4:30 enjoy a free concert from the Prince William Community Band, and of course ice cream. Perfect for the family.

Is anyone up for ballroom dancing? The Center for the Arts at the Candy Factory at 9419 Battle St. in Manassas is holding another of its 1st Sunday Ballroom Dances. This time arrive at 3:30 p.m. for a foxtrot lesson, followed by an open session to practice what you’ve learned. Beginners, intermediates and expert dancers welcome. The cost is $15 per lesson and dance or $10 just for the dance.
