Weekend Beat: Come Out to Support Local Artists, Performers

Posted

This weekend is all about the performing arts, but rather than big traveling shows, it’s local performers; you may even be able to add yourself to the stage bill. Check out the small stage at Orange Leaf of Bristow and Deja Brew of Haymarket. Or, go to the big stage at Hylton Center to hear some musical numbers performed by the University Chorale.

Orange Leaf of Bristow frozen yogurt will hold its first live music event this Friday, April 5 at 7:30 p.m. Alternative rocker Cormac O’Rourke is the featured musician. His hauntingly melodic début album “Run Riot” is available on iTunes. Katie Cox is the accompanying artist.

Déjà Brew of Haymarket will hold its first open-mic night dedicated entirely to local writers Friday April 5 at 7 p.m. Whether you write escapade novels, evocative poetry or persnickety essays about how no one in Virginia uses their turn signal, you are invited.

Bristow Run Elementary, is putting the "run" back in Bristow Run this weekend, with a Panther Pride 5K and fun run/walk at 8 a.m. along with a health-conscious vendor fair. Proceeds go to support the school's new pilot program from PWCS' global curriculum initiative on the elementary level. Arrive around 7 a.m. to register on race day.

If an open mic night seems like just the thing on a Saturday night, Déjà Brew will open their mic to you at 7 p.m. Of course, you can enjoy some good music and caffeinated beverages as you work up the courage or make up your mind. They also will have a live stream of the performances on-line (but don’t let that discourage you.)
