Weekend Beat: Sweet Delights for the Senses

It’s the weekend before Valentine’s Day. Choose to make it as sweet as you wish. Take a sweet chocolate walk, or indulge in some sweet melodies. No matter in which direction you decide to head, expect to hear music playing...and maybe see some lights flashing.

Friday: Feb. 8, 2013

“From Pink Floyd to Justin Bieber- Light Shows Entertain and Educate,” take in a laser light and music entertainment show at Hylton High School’s planetarium throughout February. Friday night, there is something for everyone: Laser Beatles at 6 p.m., the animated Story of Orion at 7:30, and Laser Vinyl Classic Rock Experience at 9 p.m.

Saturday: Feb. 9, 2013

The Town of Occoquan is holding a chocolate walk in and around the shops on Mill Street from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Thirty-nine businesses are participating, so shoppers can sample fine chocolates or partake in a wine tasting. Then stop by Blue Arbor Café for a special hot chocolate and chocolate cheesecake made by German bakers.

Deja Brew will hold an open mic night from 7:30 to 11 p.m. Come out for a night of coffee, live acoustic music and spoken word poetry. Sign up to perform or just enjoy local talent. If you can’t make it out live stream it from home at www.livestream.com/dejabrewlive.

China National Symphony Orchestra performs at 8 p.m. at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Merchant Hall. One of the outstanding professional orchestras in China, they will perform Requiem for the Earth Movement 1, Tachaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7. Tickets are $44-60. Get one free ticket with a Mason student ID.

Sunday: Feb. 10, 2013 

Bon Jovi is performing at 7:30 p.m. at the Verizon Center in Washington D.C. Tickets start at $40. The Jersey boys are back on tour, after their rise to stardom in the 1980s, in their dubbed “Because We Can,” tour. The band includes all original members sans bassist Alec John Such.

Come out to Jammin’ Java in Vienna Sunday evening for a reggae vibe. “Original Rastars” Rex Riddem, Mustafa Akbar and Ashish “Has” Vyas build their precussions and elctronic trio around mellow vocals and rhymes. They will be joined by Carribean electronic band Empresarios. Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 day of.

At 4 p.m. in Merchant’s Hall of the Hylton Performing Arts Center the Youth Orchestras of Prince William will present a world premiere. The piece "Glimpse" offers a new perspective on the American orchestra sound. Joining the Youth Symphony Orchestra will be the Wind Symphony. Both performances will be tied together by lighting and stage design and color. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and students.
