Brentsville District High School Booster Club won $1000 from Chick-fil-A Bristow and C2 Education Center, Gainesville at a lively Sports Breakfast Sat. morning at the Bristow Chick-fil-A in Sowder Village Sq., Manassas. Patriot High School took second place, earning $500 for its Booster Club. The event featured dancing mascots from the Washington Nationals and other local teams, as well as professional athletes.

From Sept. 22 to Sept. 28 the two Nokesville high schools competed to see which had the most Chick-fil-A/ school spirit. During that week, Chick-fil-A encouraged student, parents, alumni and school supporters to visit Chick-fil-A, order a meal and vote for either school. Students also decorated the restaurant to represent the two schools colors and mascots.

“I think I’ve been here at least five times this week,” said Brentsville Varsity Football Capt., David Boyle.“We’re not going to let Patriot beat us at anything.”

But the athletes had a little help from their families as well, as a team of moms, who came Sat. morning decked out in orange and black. Mom Rachel Shepherd said Brentsville’s win was a team effort all around.

“(There were) emails to the parents. The kids had in on their page book pages (and) student government page. The kids have been amazing!” said Shepherd.

Even a Patriot mom recognized that Brentsville did a really good job of promoting the event.

However, on Sat. it was more than high school athletes who were drawn to the festivities. Many families brought their young children to Chick-fil-A that morning to see the towering bobblehead mascots of the Washington Nationals: Presidents George, Thomas,

Abraham and Teddy, who were joined Screech of the Nationals, Talon of DC United, G-Whiz of the Wizards and Slapshot of the Capitals. The mascot did not disappoint, as they competed in races, dribbled basketballs, danced the Macarana, signed autographs and hammed it up for the Chick-fil-A customers.

There were real athletes for the students to meet. Benita Fitzgerald Mosley, 1992 Olympic Gold Medalist in Track & Field, Devon McTavish, Virginia native and former DC United soccer player, and Markita Alridge-Woods, former Washington Mystic player (WNBA) were also present, and received a Chick-fil-A Inspiration Award.

Local vendors were also in attendance , and the other sponsors included GEICO: David Stinson’s Northern Virginia office, Simply Orange, American Disposal Services, and DPGolf.

Before presenting the $1000 and $500 checks, Bristow Chick-fil-A owner Mike Lovette thanked local teachers and coaches, saying, “There is no better contributors to our society than our educators. They are everything to everyone.”

C2 Education Center owner, Myung Choi, whose company matched the Chick-fil-A sponsorship said he was happy to sponsor the event. He also and said his company would like to work closely with local schools in the future.

Laney King, younger sister of Patriot High School student, Darby King, thanked Chick-fil-A and Lovette for their contributions to the community.

“They have got great chicken,” she said, “And it’s fun that they do all these annual things.”
