For her eighth consecutive year, Sima Button, Independent Beauty Consultant for Mary Kay Cosmetics, is working with the western Prince William and Manassas community to Adopt A Grandparent around the holidays.
For $20, customers can buy a Mary Kay gift set for a resident at the Gainesville Health and Rehab center home in Gainesville to be distributed on December 23. According to Button, it is important because “it may be the only gift they receive this holiday.”
This year, Button urges folks to get an early start on their gift giving. During the month of September, for every two gift sets purchased, Button will match them by donating one herself.
The gift package is thoughtful and practical. It includes fragrance-free hand cream and lip-balm, all of which are items Button has found that nursing home residents really use. It is all fragrance free so it works even for those with sensitive skin or allergies.
“We’re giving them stuff that even if the nurse uses it on them, they can use,” Button explained, and being fragrance free, the smell “is not offensive to anyone.”
Every year Button gets to play Santa Claus handing out the gifts, either along with someone from her Mary Kay team or members of the staff at the nursing home. She really enjoys witnessing the residents’ reactions.
“They are so excited. Their faces light up,” she said. “Just having a visitor is exciting for them. Having a visitor and a gift is even better.”
When people are not in their rooms, Button still leaves the gift by their bedside. And those who donate the gift have the option of including a tag with their names or business names as relatives tend to visit during the holiday and may notice the gift. Sometimes businesses have teamed with Button on Adopt A Grandparent to purchase several gifts in the business’ name.
Every year, her goal is to be able to provide a gift to every resident at the nursing home. That means she will need to provide 120 gifts.
Although there is still plenty of time before Christmas, Sima and her husband are expecting their first child in October. Expecting that things might get a bit hectic around the holidays, Button hopes the community helps her get a head start on what she believes is a worthwhile cause.
