Last night, Republican Presidential Candidate Donald J. Trump stunned the world by winning a majority of Electoral Vote to become the 45th president of the United States. Prince William County, however, went solidly blue for Democrat Hillary Clinton. Clinton won by nearly 57 percent in the county, while Trump took 37 percent of the vote. It turns out that Virginia was one swing state that did follow expectations. It turned blue for President Obama in 2008 and 2012, and that leaning continued Tuesday night for Hillary Clinton. Prince William reflected that overall trend in Virginia, and was a key county, which helped secure a Clinton victory in the Commonwealth.
Keep reading following graphic.... In recent years, Prince William County has become a minority-majority community. Additionally, it has a large population of residents who work for the Federal Government and commute to Washington, D.C. and surrounding cities. Perhaps that makes us "Washington Insiders" whom the rest of the nation seems to mistrust. Below is the break down of the votes in the Brentsville and Gainesville district. They are almost evenly divided between precincts going for Trump and Clinton. Considering they are the most Republican districts in the county, it seems Trump underperformed there. Republicans may have been less enthusiastic about Trump than they might have been for another Republican candidate. Pundits expected similar results around the nation, but national results did not reflect that. On the other hand, down ballot races were not affected by Clinton's win in Prince William County. Republicans Barbara Comstock (VA-10) and Rob Wittman (VA-1) have both retained their seats in the House of Representatives.
So, why did Trump lose Prince William County? Was it because he was a Washington outsider, or was it his rhetoric? Are we doing better in Prince William than other areas of the country? Is Prince William simply like many other suburbs, which tend to be more liberal than rural areas? Are you surprised by a Trump victory? Are you surprised by a Clinton victory in Prince William County? Let us know (kindly) in the comment section. Brentsville Precincts Clinton Trump
