There was no sleeping in last Saturday morning for fitness buffs at Victory Elementary School, who participated in the Run for Victory.

This is the fifth year for Run for Victory, the annual P.T.O. fundraiser, which collects pledges from runners that go towards funding technology and other needed items for Victory Elementary School in Bristow.

Victory Elementary Principal Donna Kirby said the run is primarily to promote fitness among the school community, but has also helped the school purchase new technology, such as Promethean Boards for the 2010-11 school year. After the cost of the 5K is covered, Kirby said any additional funds will go towards the purchase of laptops and storage carts to support their on-line SOL testing.

This year's 5K had a good turnout, according to P.T.O. member and Race Director Jeannie LaBella. In fact it had sold out.

Most people turned out to support the school their children attend, but the reach of the run extended beyond the traditional Victory Elementary community.

James Stanely just moved to the Victory Lakes neighborhood. Although his children are not yet old enough to attend Victory Elementary, he ran in support of the school.

“(I came here to) support our local functions,” Stanely said, who also hoped to get back into running.

“I was running everyday,” said Stanely. He now intends to continue his running throughout the summer.

Linda Hofferek heard about the run on a running website and brought her entire family, even though her children attend a different schools.

“I looked up the run, and I wanted to help support the school’s program. And I wanted to get the kids out being active in a family activity,” said Hofferek.

The run, was ideal for families, since it offered a one-mile fun run and a 5K, which many children participating in as well.

Ty Baron is a third grader at Victory Elementary who belongs to the running club. He received a metal for running the one-mile, along with his brother, Blake in first grade. Blake said he enjoys running.

“Well, I just like it, so I can get exercise. And it’s fun,” Blake said.

The Raise the Bar Strength and Conditioning Facility on Hornbaker Road off Wellington in Manassas was one sponsor present at the event.

It is a brand new gym facility that focuses on personal training and reaching individual goals in a time effective manner, through cooperation with a trainer. It also offers boot camps in the morning and evening.

Co-owner Dana Ryan thought the Run for Victory was a good fit for their business as it promotes fitness in the community.
