Pickle Jar Prompts Hazmat Investigation in Bristow Neighborhood

Posted

Hazmat units responded to Gary Glen Drive in Bristow Wednesday night after a resident discovered a pickle jar containing an unknown substance.

According to a resident, a neighbor found a duffle bag in the woods near Cedar Point Elementary School that contained a jar filled with a liquid. After the individual opened the jar, it emitted a gas and caught fire.

"He got the jar out of his garage and into the side yard where it continued to smoke and burn, so they called the police," the resident said.

Fire & Rescue units determined that the substance was not toxic.

Police suspect that the contents of the jar is a narcotic.

"They told me it seems to have been a backpack with some chemicals used to make drugs that was dumped in the wooded area," she said.

Units from the  Nokesville Volunteer Fire Department responded with support from the Coles District, Buckhall, Manassas City and the Prince William County Departments of Fire & Rescue and Hazmat teams.

As of 10:30 a.m. Thursday, a small disposal crew remains on the scene.

According to police, the investigation is ongoing.
