ECI8While residents are seeing 6 or more inches of accumulation at 8 p.m. Friday, the forecasted high wind speeds will hit the area tonight.

According to Bristow weatherman and "Weather Beat" columnist John Biggs, the low has moved offshore, so residents will soon start to see the worst of the storm.

The National Weather Service reports that snow will be heavy at times with widespread blowing and drifting after 1 a.m.

"Winds will increase rapidly tonight due to the strengthening low. The strongest winds will be east of the Blue Ridge mountains and over the higher terrain. The combination of strong winds and heavy snow will cause blizzard conditions across the Washington and Baltimore metropolitan areas as well as the Blue Ridge mountains.

A blizzard warning remains in effect for Northern Virginia.

Lows will be around 23 degrees with a north wind 14 to 24 mph, with gusts as high as 37 mph.

Some thunder is also possible with this storm.

Overnight residents should see snow accumulations of 10 to 16 inches; Saturday could bring an additional 8-12 inches.
